Our School

Located on the grounds of the Notre Dame Centre (on the border of Burlington/Waterdown), we are situated on 50 acres of Niagara Escarpment land.  The outdoor environment allows aspects of nature to be part of the child’s learning. Families are attracted by the peaceful, natural setting, the small size of the school, and the programs we offer. Waterdown Montessori School has educated thousands of children across a span of more than three decades. We are an authentic Montessori school to the core- from our staff to our materials and curriculum. Our goal is to have a beautiful, nurturing, stimulating environment for young children where self-esteem is protected and encouraged and where the adventures of learning are approached with joy and readiness.

Our Staff

Our low student/staff ratios allow our staff to observe each child’s own individual development. Accordingly, our teachers are able to work closely with each child to provide the most optimal learning environment. Our teachers act as a guide who stimulates and directs the child’s own interests and curiosity. All of our teachers hold Montessori diplomas certified by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and/or Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). All of our assistants are experienced, with the majority being Montessori trained as well.

Our Classrooms

Our warm and inviting classrooms are filled with diverse, appealing materials that provide students with active, hands-on learning experiences that engage all of their senses and nurture their natural creativity and curiosity. The furniture has been custom made to be at the right size for the children. Simple shelves display a range of materials that draw their attention. Our mixed age classes empower older children to be leaders and mentors to younger children, encouraging opportunities for the development of empathy and social learning while fostering a sense of community within the classroom and beyond.  Students direct their own learning by working at their own pace and by actively choosing from Montessori’s practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language/literacy, cultural and creative materials, while working under the guidance and support of our experienced and knowledgeable Montessori teachers.

Focus on active learning

Our curriculum, which focuses on active learning, gives children the opportunity to learn and explore in a nurturing and supportive environment that engages all of their senses. Students choose hands-on materials from practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language/literacy, cultural and creative areas and work under the guidance of our experienced and knowledgeable Montessori guides. Our low student-teacher ratios allow our teachers to assist each and every student in reaching his or her full potential and to foster a love for learning and thirst for knowledge that will remain for years to come.
